INGREDIENTS
Cookies
- 🧈 1 cup unsalted butter
- 🧂 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar
- 🥚 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 🧂 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
Frosting
- 8 ounces cream cheese
- 🧈 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 🧂 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
- 1/4 cup sour cream
- 5 drops green food coloring
STEPS
Line 4 baking sheets with parchment paper.
Cream together butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar in a stand mixer until light and fluffy, about 4-5 minutes. Add egg and vanilla extract, mixing until well incorporated.
Mix flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt into the mixture to form a smooth dough.
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare portions of dough in three sizes: 1 teaspoon, 2 teaspoons, and 1 tablespoon. Roll into balls and coat with sanding or sparkling sugar.
Bake the cookies in batches, based on size, for 5-9 minutes until edges are lightly browned.
Cool cookies completely on wire racks.
Prepare frosting by creaming cream cheese and butter in a stand mixer for about 3 minutes. Gradually add powdered sugar, then mix vanilla, salt, sour cream, and food coloring until smooth and evenly colored.
Assemble cookie stacks by layering large, medium, and small cookies with frosting in between. Top with a swirl of frosting to resemble a tree, and decorate with sprinkles.
